The fight against Dracula is one of the most offensive instances of straight-up bullshit in any game I've played, regardless of age it's simply too demanding in what it asks of your precision and endurance. On the other hand, knockback and damage are simply frustrating, especially as it scales in later stages and the severe difficulty spike during the last 2 stages.

Presentation aside, however, the gameplay is what really feels like a double-edged sword to me: for one, Simon's control in his fixed jump arc and delayed attacks add necessary tension and thinking-ahead to what would be an otherwise standard platforming game. The sound design is crunchy and satisfying, and it goes without saying that the music kicks absolute ass and really has no reason to go as hard as it does. The game absolutely nails its tone and atmosphere in the form of scale as you progress through the numerous chambers of Dracula's castle, visably getting closer and closer to his throne room even now, its a pretty visually impressive game.

60% Nintendo SwitchCastlevania is a reasonably enjoyable, albeit brutally unforgiving action-platforming experience of it's time.
